What You Need Before Starting a Rental Application

Required documents for your application

Starting your application is much faster if you gather a few things first.

Use the checklist below and only focus on the sections that apply to you.

Step 1 — A Valid Photo ID (Required for Everyone)

Your identity will be verified automatically during the application.

Accepted IDs

You can use one current, government-issued photo ID:

  • Driver’s License
  • State ID
  • Passport or Passport Card
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Employment Authorization Card

Not Accepted

You cannot use:

  • Expired IDs
  • Paper or temporary IDs
  • Non-US IDs (driver’s license or ID card)
  • School ID, work badge, bank card, or other non-government ID
  • Social Security card
  • Photos, screenshots, or photocopies

📌 Important:

You must allow camera access on your phone or computer to complete verification (See: Camera and Browser Settings).

Step 2 — Your Housing History

You’ll need contact details for where you live (or lived).

If you currently rent

Have ready:

  • Landlord or property company name
  • Phone number
  • Email

If you lived there less than 10 years → you’ll also enter your previous address.

If you own your home

Provide:

  • Mortgage company name
    • (Even if the home is paid off)

If you live with family or friends

You’ll enter additional details explaining your living arrangement.

Step 3 — Your Income Information

Most applications verify income instantly by connecting your bank account.

Prepare your bank login

You may connect multiple accounts.

If manual documents are requested

Upload PDFs when possible:

Situation
Document to Provide
Employed
Recent pay stubs (showing your name)
Starting a new job
Offer letter
Self-employed
Last year’s tax return
Needed by property
Recent bank statements

Step 4 — Check Your Credit Status

If your credit is frozen or locked, remove the freeze at least 3 business days before applying or the screening may fail.

Step 5 — Only If It Applies to You

You do not need these unless they apply:

Housing Assistance (Section 8)

Have your voucher details and documents available.

Pets

You may be asked to complete a pet profile regardless of pet ownership. Prepare:

  • Pet photos
  • Vaccination records
  • Rabies documentation

Emotional Support Animal (ESA)

Upload your ESA paperwork during the application to avoid delays.

💡

No pet? You still may be required to complete a pet profile or note that you do not have a pet.

Quick Readiness Check

You’re ready to start when you have:

  • A valid photo ID
  • Valid Social Security Number (ITINs are not accepted)
  • Landlord or housing history info
  • Bank login or income documents
  • No credit freeze
  • (Optional) pet, ESA, or voucher documents

Why This Matters

Most delays happen because applicants pause mid-application to find documents.

Having everything ready helps prevent:

  • Expired sessions
  • Failed verification
  • Manual review delays

Still Missing Something?

You can start the application, but you may not be able to submit it until all required items are completed.
